Lifting your Spirits – How to Stop Drinking Alcohol

Do you use alcohol to help you feel better? Does the world look better when you’ve had a few drinks? Do you find yourself unable to communicate when sober?

If alcohol has started to become your "friend", it may be time for you to examine how you work with your emotions. For many alcoholics, emotions are a scary thing, and you may be the sort of person who has not learned to deal with them (or perhaps, as a child, been taught to suppress them).

For many people with drinking problems, dealing with their emotions is a far greater fear and challenge than dealing with the alcohol addiction.

If you want to learn how to stop drinking alcohol, you will need to learn to deal with your own emotions. People tend to learn that emotions are not under their control, and that belief becomes true – not because it must be so, but because it’s believed.

Amazingly, with a little training and some persistent practice, it is possible to learn to take hold of your own emotions and state of mind. Some people who have practiced for long enough now "design" their states of mind, which means that they can be comfortable and happy in any situation (barring extremes such as death).

Designing your own state of mind must start, initially, with the realization that it is possible. A woman once said about one of these people, "But can he really be so happy all of the time? No, of course not." That woman had the belief that it was impossible, and so she will continue for the rest of her life feeling feelings that seem to be outside of her control. She cannot control what makes her happy or sad, and so her life is just "luck".

Once you have realized, the next step is to find out how. It is a process of growth, but the good news is that the first steps can be learned quickly. Those first steps, which can be learned with the help of mind specialists such as hypnotherapists, experts in NLP (neurolinguistic programming) and similar, allow you to take control.

After that, it is just practice and persistence. That doesn’t mean, of course, that you should stop learning – far from it. Once you have learned to take control, continued learning means that you can start to learn to design your states of mind.

The ultimate (and it’s easier than it sounds) is, in any situation, to ask yourself, "What state of mind would serve me and the people around me best?" Then, in just seconds, create that state of mind. For example, I used to panic in emergencies. That didn’t help anyone. Now, no matter what the emergency (and I’ve dealt with a few), I keep a cool head with clear thinking powers. That serves both me and the people suffering in the emergency.

Drinking As A Pastime

There was a time in my life that I drank beer as my favorite pastime. Really, it’s true. I of course only realized this after finally walking away from drinking, but the point is that drinking was literally what I did for fun. I always figured drinking was just kind of "along for the ride" , if you will, but finally realized that the act of drinking was my pastime. The interesting thing about this little Christopher Columbus like discovery I made was the fact that almost everyone I knew was just like me!

I’ve heard it said before that you become just like the people that you spend time with, but never gave it any credence. That was until I came to these realizations for myself. It’s so perplexing to me, but most everything that I did at that time in my life, revolved around drinking beer. Well, maybe revolved isn’t the correct term, but involved drinking beer. Going over to a friend’s house to have a BBQ? Who’s bringing the beer? Going to the lake fishing? Did you remember the beer? Playing cards in your buddies’ basement? How much beer do you have? These are all the types of questions that were always asked. None of these so called "things to do" were about whatever it was that was being done, they were about the drinking!

Once my daughter incarnated into this world (which is another story) and I decided to walk away from drinking, I also walked away from all of these so called "things to do". Not as a conscience effort, but just naturally. I didn’t see the "friends" or "buddies" anymore either. Once I stopped drinking they all faded away as well, again not consciously, but it just seemed to "happen". This is when I came to the realization that drinking was my pastime, none of the so called things to do or friends mattered.

Once I really started to analyze it, I also realized that this had been going on for 15 years! Drinking had been my favorite pastime for 15 years, and do you know what else was ironic? I was in about the same position, personally, as I was when it all started. It’s almost as if those 15 years was a dream! A dream we would all rather not have by the way. The point is that by the grace of God my daughter came into my life and all of that came to an end. I’ve heard it said that everything happens for a reason, well now I know that statement to be true.

What Is a Good Alcohol Detox Protocol?

An alcohol detox, or detoxification protocol simply means a plan for ridding the body of the toxic effects of alcohol. It is generally the first step in a recovery program, especially when the patient is a chronic alcoholic.

Detoxification of the body usually involves withdrawal symptoms. These can range from only mildly bothersome, like sweating, dry mouth, or minor shakiness to full-fledged tremors, vomiting, or seizures. Medical intervention is often the first step of the detox protocol.

Campral may be prescribed to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Whether or not drugs are prescribed, close monitoring of the patient going through detox is required. And it should be pointed out that the detox program itself does not "cure" the patient of alcoholism. It does, however, prepare him or her to accept more readily the therapeutic treatment that follows.

The detox protocol has clearly defined stages, but each stage is personalized according to the patient’s needs. The first stage is stabilization. Many patients finally seek treatment when they feel they’ve hit "rock bottom". Once at the physician’s office or treatment center, personnel may identify multiple dependencies or issues that must be dealt with.

Alcohol, like many other drugs, provides a quick "high" or feeling of well-being. That feeling is always followed by a "downer" or depression. The second stage in the detox protocol is getting the patient through withdrawal symptoms. Drugs such as Valium or Klonopin can help ease the symptoms. Without these treatments, most patients would just give up when the discomfort level got too high. With drug treatment and monitoring by trained personnel, many patients make it through this phase. The second day of sobriety is generally considered to be the day with the worst withdrawal symptoms.

Because of the high sugar content of most alcoholic drinks, hypoglycemia can be a significant threat. The detox protocol must include close monitoring by trained personnel so that carbohydrate-heavy fluids like orange juice can be given as needed. Drug therapy may once again come into play here.

Alcohol Rehab Program Saves Proud Mom

Anna has been to three of the best known and most exclusive (and expensive) drug and alcohol rehab program facilities in the country. So, she did it again. And the third time was the charm. Anna is now sober and facing her life with renewed vigor. "I have made some great friends in alcohol rehab, and the last treatment program that I successfully finished has given me the rest of the tools that I will need to stay sober forever. I am also involved in a great aftercare program and the groups that I attend provide me with support."

How Do I Avoid Drinking Too Much Alcohol?

If you are trying to prevent yourself from drinking too much alcohol at social gatherings or even in your daily life, there are certain things you should know about how to live a life that is balanced and alcohol-free. Here are a few ways that you can keep your alcohol intake under control.

Stop Drinking: Its the best option for your health

The addiction is always stronger than the desire to quit. But, it can be done. I did it. I have been sober for thirteen years. I got tired of blackouts and hangovers and acting like someone I’m not when I’m without alcohol. I knew I wanted to stop, but I had no clue how. I went to a twelve step meeting in my church, and kept going every night to different meetings, for four and a half years. If you let the seriously sober men and women help you, you can beat this addiction. You don’t have to be afraid to go to meetings, some of the nicest people I have ever met came from inside those rooms. There is a silent camaraderie among fellow drunks, and we are more alike than different. There is a humbleness and an honesty that goes with trying to quit an addiction, and we all shared it. It’s the only place you can get your own sponsor who will work the steps with you, and share their experiences, hopes and dreams. They are usually men and women who have been in the program for a while, and can help you with the skills they learned, and turn around and teach you.

It is likely that the stress of her husband’s nine-month terminal illness caused her to fall back into heavy drinking. It is only three months since his death, and she is probably using alcohol to numb her grief. It is also possible that she may feel humiliated and ashamed that her excessive drinking is apparent to others, and she just wants to avoid the issue entirely. There are two positive factors in this scenario: that she managed once to quit drinking for several years and that she continues to visit her physician on a regular basis. I would suggest that it would be counterproductive at this time to confront her about her drinking. It would be unfortunate to drive her away from medical contact and lose her trust. Instead, the focus should be on her grief and how she is coping with the loss of her husband. Bereavement counseling should be offered.

How can I stop drinking? There are many ways to help yourself stop drinking. You do not have to drink when other people drink. If someone gives you a drink, it is OK to say no. Stay away from people or places that make you drink. Do not keep alcohol at home. If you cannot stop drinking, GET HELP. You may have a disease called alcoholism. There are programs that can help you stop drinking. They are called alcohol treatment programs. Your doctor or nurse can find a program to help you. Even if you have been through a treatment program before, try it again. There are programs just for women.

Set a positive tone. When your teen is ready to drive, let him know that you think he will be a great driver. At the same time, grant privileges slowly so you can add more as your son or daughter demonstrates they are ready for them instead of having to take privileges away when your trust is violated. Teenagers love to test their parents and in fact it is their job to do so. It is the parents’ job to set clear rules and to hold teenagers responsible when they are violated. Consider rewarding your teen if he or she is accident-free for a certain period of time and remove restrictions when you find they are no longer necessary.Sign a Contract. The best way to lay out the rules you expect your new driver to follow is to put them in a contract you both will sign. The contract should cover such things as the number of friends who can be in the car with the new driver (most likely one), what time the driver must be home on school nights and weekends, responsibilities for gas, insurance and car maintenance and the mandatory use of seat belts for all passengers.

Warning signs of alcoholism may vary form person to person. Usually though these warning signs will be obvious. The following list outlines some of these signs. – misses a lot of work or school – losses interest in family, friends or activities – depression – drinking to cope with any problem – insomnia – being intoxicated often – moody – drinking related health problems These are some of the noticeable warning signs. More serious behaviors can also serve as a wake-up call. Risky behavior like drinking and driving should be taken seriously.

At the very least stop drinking 4 – 6 hours before going to bed. This grace period will allow your body a chance to for the effects of the alcohol to wear off and reduce the effects that it may have on your sleeping, helping you to sleep without snoring.Sedatives such as sleeping pills behave much in the same way as alcohol, and amplify the affect if you take them while drinking, causing your body to relax its muscles and inducing many of the same symptoms as alcohol. When you snore, you not only do you hurt yourself – studies have shown that a spouse, or significant other, can lose up to an hour of sleep per night. Causing them not only to be ‘cranky’ in the morning, but potentially destroying your relationship. So, don’t just do it for yourself – do it for your loved one!

On another note, you may also want to cut salty foods from your diet. Why? Simply because salt (or sodium) cause your body to retain water, which will also make your love-handles look worse than they are. So, avoid using extra salt on your food and also avoid processed food as they generally have high sodium content. Drinking a lot of water helps fight against those love-handles as well as it helps you metabolize your stored body fat into energy. Not to mention that it will help reduce your appetite and keep your body hydrated. In any event, you don’t have to keep your love handles forever. All it takes are some adjustments in your daily intake with the addition of regular exercise. This will help you lose weight overall along with your love handles, and increase your well-being. Learning More About Your Drinking Problem

Alcoholism is an illness marked by drinking alcoholic beverages at a level that interferes with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or occupational responsibilities. Alcoholism is divided into 2 categories: dependence and abuse. People with alcohol dependence, the most severe alcohol disorder, usually experience tolerance and withdrawal. Tolerance is a need for markedly increased amounts of alcohol to achieve intoxication or the desired effect. Withdrawal occurs when alcohol is discontinued or intake is decreased. Alcohol dependents spend a great deal of time drinking alcohol, and obtaining it. People who are dependent on or abuse alcohol continue to drink it despite evidence of physical or psychological problems. Those with dependence have more severe problems and a greater compulsion to drink.

Because alcohol affects many organs in the body, long-term heavy drinking puts you at risk for developing serious health problems, some of which are described below. More than 2 million Americans suffer from alcohol-related liver disease. Some drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, as a result of long-term heavy drinking. Moderate drinking can have beneficial effects on the heart, especially among those at greatest risk for heart attacks, such as men over the age of 45 and women after menopause. But long-term heavy drinking increases the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some kinds of stroke. The pancreas helps to regulate the body’s blood sugar levels by producing insulin. The pancreas also has a role in digesting the food we eat. Long-term heavy drinking can lead to pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. This condition is associated with severe abdominal pain and weight loss and can be fatal.

Drunk driving is no accident. There were 16,885 alcohol-related fatalities in 2005 – 39 percent of the total traffic fatalities for the year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), "A motor vehicle crash is considered to be alcohol-related if at least one driver or non-occupant (such as a pedestrian or pedalcyclist) involved in the crash is determined to have had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01 gram per deciliter (g/dL) or higher. Thus, any fatality that occurs in an alcohol-related crash is considered an alcohol-related fatality. The term ‘alcohol-related’ does not indicate that a crash or fatality was caused by the presence of alcohol." The statistics reveal that most fatal alcohol-related crashes do indeed involve drunk drivers and far fewer of these fatalities involve intoxicated pedestrians or "bicyclists and other cyclists". Nationwide in 2005, alcohol was present in 24 percent of the drivers involved in fatal crashes (BAC .01-.07, 4 percent; BAC .08 or greater, 20 percent). The 16,885 alcohol-related fatalities in 2005 (39% of total traffic fatalities for the year) represent a 5-percent reduction from the 17,732 alcohol related fatalities reported in 1995 (42% of the total). The 16,885 fatalities in alcohol-related crashes during 2005 represent an average of one alcohol-related fatality every 31 minutes.

Alcohol addiction causes so much suffering in marriage. Besides being physically and emotionally harmful to alcoholics themselves, addiction is also harmful to those whose lives touch them. Addiction makes people insensitive to the feelings of those who care most for them, and they will stop at nothing to feed their addiction. Alcoholics commonly engage in their most painful habits while under the influence. Acts of infidelity are common. The fact that he or she is drunk at the time is no consolation to a grief-stricken spouse. It can require a lot of strength for children to resist peer pressure and media influences. When it comes to alcohol and drugs, the most useful weapon that your children can have is facts and knowledge, instead of scare tactics and threats from their parents. Children’s trust in parents can go way up on the scale when they actually researched the topic of drugs with their parents. Many successful parents decide that one of the best ways to avoid their children being drawn into drugs, is to educate them, and learn together, rather than simply condemning the topic out of hand. If you do not want to create that taboo effect in your household, while you do not wish to condone alcohol and drugs, you should make sure that your kids know that they can talk to you about these issues at anytime they wish. Although many parents may disagree, but other say that if their kids are going to try alcohol then they might as well try it in safety at home. One advantage of this liberal approach is that in children’s minds, if it does not seem like things are "off limits" then they will not be attracted to doing it just because they are not supposed to.

Children can be influenced from a very young age, and carry their experiences into their adolescent years. Growing up around alcohol can encourage them to drink, and vice versa. However, many parents ponder the issue of how much exposure to alcohol is too much and how much is not enough. Total abstinence of alcohol could lead to intense curiosity and therefore crazy experimentations. Total exposure can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Thus, the best method would be a balance between the two, with the adults of the family setting good examples, and with schools educating children on alcohol thoroughly.

Over the past 20 years, modern methods of evaluating medical therapies have been increasingly applied to alcohol treatment. Alcohol treatment centers use both counseling and medications to help a person stop drinking. With support and treatment, many people are able to stop drinking alcohol and rebuild their lives. Alcohol treatment programs work for many people.But just like any chronic disease, there are varying levels of success when it comes to alcohol treatment. Some people stop drinking and remain sober on their own. Others have long periods of sobriety with bouts of relapse. With alcohol treatment, one thing is clear, however, the longer a person abstains from alcohol, the more likely he or she will be able to stay sober.

Here are some good step by step ways to stop drinking: 1. Write your reasons for cutting down or stopping. Why do you want to drink less? There are many reasons why you may want to cut down or stop drinking. You may want to improve your health, sleep better, or get along better with your family or friends. Make a list of the reasons you want to drink less. 2. Set a drinking goal. Choose a limit for how much you will drink. You may choose to cut down or not to drink at all. If you are cutting down, keep below these limits: Women: No more than one drink a day Men: No more than two drinks a day. A drink is: a 12-ounce bottle of beer; a 5-ounce glass of wine; or a 1 1/2-ounce shot of liquor. These limits may be too high for some people who have certain medical problems or who are older. Talk with your doctor about the limit that is right for you. Now-write your drinking goal on a piece of paper. Put it where you can see it, such as on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror. Your paper might look like this: My drinking goal I will start on this day ____________. I will not drink more than ______ drinks in 1 day. I will not drink more than ______ drinks in 1 week. or I will stop drinking alcohol. 3. Keep a "diary" of your drinking. To help you reach your goal, keep a "diary" of your drinking. For example, write down every time you have a drink for 1 week. Try to keep your diary for 3 or 4 weeks. This will show you how much you drink and when. You may be surprised. How different is your goal from the amount you drink now? Use the "drinking diary" below to write down when you drink.
